Heads up, Texoma 8th Graders!

You could win a trip to Youth Power Energy Camp this summer!

Each year, SWRE joins the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives to sponsor the Youth Power Energy Camp at Red Rock Canyon near Hinton, Oklahoma. The camp, slated for the late May (immediately after school is dismissed for the summer), is designed to help students develop leadership skills while having lots of fun!

By forming their own cooperative business, camp participants will learn about leadership and business while interacting with other 8th graders from across the state. Campers will also have the opportunity to learn about generating and distributing electricity by touring the electric generation facilities at Western Farmers Electric Cooperative in Anadarko and the offices of Caddo Electric Cooperative in Binger. Linemen will put on safety demonstrations and students will even get a chance to try their hand at riding bucket trucks and climbing poles!

And that's not all! Campers will start the summer out right by making new friends and taking part in a variety of activities including volleyball, swimming, ping pong, hiking, and a special “surprise” outing.

The Contest

To compete for a chance to attend the 2008 Energy camp, 8th graders must submit an essay on the following topic:

"Imagine a day without electricity."

It’s a great essay topic that allows students to think about the role that electricity plays in all of our lives. How would life be different if we did not have electricity?

The essay must be 350-500 words in length. Essays will be judged on content, style and accuracy. Essays may be typewritten or written in blue or black ink.

Two students (one Texas student and one Oklahoma student) will be selected from submitted essays to represent Southwest Rural Electric at the 2008 Energy Camp. SWRE will cover all expenses relating to the camp, including transportation to and from Red Rock Canyon.

Contest finalists who are not selected for the top prize will receive $50.

Deadline for essays is Wednesday, February 20, 2008.

Essay contest forms and packet information may be downloaded below. The material is also available on request from the SWRE Communications Office (1-800-256-7973).
