It can get really hot in the summertime. When that happens, air conditioning provides welcome relief. If your system isn't living up to your expectations, don't sweat it. There are simple steps you can take to improve air conditioning system performance so you can stay cool and comfortable on the hottest summer days.

Call a pro. You can't do it all yourself. Contact a qualified professional to inspect and clean your system to ensure optimal performance all summer long.

Change air filters. Dirty filters restrict airflow, making it harder for that cool air to reach your living space. Change the filter at the beginning of the cooling season and regularly thereafter according to manufacturer's guidelines.

Seal air leaks. Everyone loves the great outdoors, but not enough to waste money keeping it cool all summer. Check for gaps around exterior doors and where window frames meet the side of your house. Close door gaps with weatherstripping and use caulk to seal windows.

Block the sun. You come inside to get away from the hot sun; it only makes sense to use window treatments to keep that hot sun out. Shades, blinds or draperies can reduce heat gain on summer afternoons, especially on south-facing windows.

Keep registers clear. Supply and return air vents are no place to set furniture, piles of junk or dog beds. Blocked or partially blocked vents restrict airflow, throwing the system out of balance and making you less comfortable. Keep all registers clear to ensure that air flows freely.

Check attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic can let a significant amount of heat into your home. Hire a qualified contractor to inspect your attic and add insulation (if needed) according to levels recommended for your climate zone. Make sure that any gaps around upstairs ceiling vents and light fixtures are properly sealed.

With these tips, you'll stay comfortable and enjoy some cool savings all summer long.
